A Historic Bluemont Estate with a Remarkable Literary Past—Reimagined Through a Three-Year Comprehensive Redesign & Renovation

PRIVATE RETREAT - AN HOUR FROM WASHINGTON, D.C.

Your escape from DC is closer than you think. A private country retreat about an hour from Washington, DC—19233 Blue Ridge Mountain Road is where literary history meets Architectural Digest-worthy design.

Few homes manage to honor their past while feeling so completely of the present. At 19233 Blue Ridge Mountain Road, an original 1880 cabin anchors a residence that has evolved over time and now has been completely reimagined through a three-year renovation, resulting in a distinctly elevated design, layering history, architecture and modern luxury.

The transformation encompassed virtually every aspect of the property, inside and out. Interior walls were structurally reworked to reshape the way the home lives, optimizing room scale and panoramic vistas. The meticulous addition of custom millwork, paneling, and structural arches and cabinetry brings an elevated level of architectural detail throughout the home. Behind the walls, the house was comprehensively rewired in copper to Code, 100% of the switches and outlets were replaced with premium Lutron lighting controls and dimmers. Designer lighting by Restoration Hardware, Visual Comfort and deVol were introduced throughout. Legacy plumbing was replaced with modern high-capacity infrastructure, and four new high-efficiency HVAC systems now provide multi-zone climate control throughout. Approximately 80 percent of the windows were replaced with architectural grade, high-efficiency windows, many enlarged to capture more light and maximize views. The exterior was structurally rebuilt and refinished with new cedar siding and custom stonework, and the outdoor living spaces were dramatically expanded. From the architecture and major systems to the lighting, finishes and landscape, the renovation was undertaken as a complete architectural reinvention rather than just a series of updates.

For all that was transformed, equal consideration was given to what should remain. The original 1880 cabin is now woven into the residence, where historic beams, stone and antique walnut woodwork preserve a tangible connection to the property's past. Originally part of the Elizabeth Fox Moore estate, the property carries a remarkable literary history: the irreplaceable cabin served as a writing sanctuary for the legendary American author John Fox Jr. It was within this structure that Fox wrote his landmark, best-selling novel The Trail of the Lonesome Pine, published in 1908. The popularity of the novel was so great that it was reportedly only outsold by the Bible and Gone With the Wind. The novel inspired three films including the 1936 Paramount Studios first outdoor Technicolor movie ever produced, starring Henry Fonda, Fred MacMurray, George “Spanky” McFarland and Sylvia Sidney.

From this historic core, the house unfolds into spaces that are decidedly of the present. Nowhere is that transformation more evident than in the kitchen, which was taken to the studs and expanded to more than twice its original footprint. At its center, a 10+ foot statement island is surrounded by artisan-crafted inset cabinetry, dolomite natural-stone countertops and meticulously conceived storage. A classic Shaws apron-front sink handcrafted in England is paired with Perrin & Rowe brassware, while hand-forged deVOL brass hardware and lighting, also from England, bring a refined richness to the room. A 48” Wolf Flagship gas range, a 52” Wolf Pro ventilation hood, a 48” a Sub-Zero Classic refrigerator, a 30” Wolf Professional drop-door microwave drawer, and an ultra-quiet 24” Cove/Wolf dishwasher complete a kitchen designed with the rigor of a working chef's space, but the warmth of a room meant to be lived in.

The same level of intention carries into the primary suite, which was reconfigured and expanded to create a true private retreat. The spa bath pairs classic marble checkerboard flooring with dual 60” custom vanities, quartz countertops and Restoration Hardware/Brasstech fixtures and lighting. At its center is an expansive custom-tiled steam shower with an integrated Brizo system, three body sprays, rain head and hand shower, finished in hand-curated Ann Sacks earthenware and marble mosaic tile. The remaining baths were similarly transformed with custom vanities and glass enclosures, premium Ann Sacks tile, marble, granite and soapstone tiling, and Newport Brass/Brasstech fixtures.

Beyond the main living spaces, an attached guest or multi-generational suite with it's own private entrance offers the rare ability to live independently while remaining connected to the home. With a new custom full kitchen, living area, bedroom and oversized luxury bath, the suite was completely reworked with new mahogany hardwood flooring, custom cabinetry, granite countertops and Kohler fixtures. It is equally suited to extended family, long-term guests or a private retreat within the residence.

Even the home's most functional spaces were approached with the same attention to detail. The laundry was relocated from the basement to a dedicated main-level suite with custom cabinetry and soapstone countertops. In the lower level, a custom wet bar features granite countertops, a Sub-Zero beverage center, deVOL Perrin & Rowe fixtures and Restoration Hardware lighting. A newly created mudroom features custom built-in storage with bench seating and coat hooks, a dedicated coat closet, and an oversized dog and boot wash station finished with Newport Brass fixtures. Three fireplaces—including a newly added family-room fireplace surrounded in native fieldstone and finished with an antique wood mantel—bring another layer of warmth and character throughout the home.

The transformation continues beyond the interiors. The original deck was completely removed and reconstructed on new structural footings, more than doubling its footprint to create a generous outdoor living space finished with Trex decking, updated railings and full home Restoration Hardware exterior lighting. Even the stonework carries a direct connection to the land: stone harvested from the property was transported for precision cutting and milling, then returned to the site and incorporated into the new exterior work, preserving the natural mineral coloration of the historic stone.

Beyond the immediate living spaces, the 12.15 acres have been thoughtfully shaped to balance privacy, beauty and utility. Extensive clearing and grading opened the landscape, while a professionally designed, low-maintenance layout introduced new sod, Limelight hydrangeas, boxwoods, a specimen dogwood tree and additional stonework around the home.

Adding to the property’s versatility is an exceptional collection of outbuildings, including a restored goat barn, well-sized workshop, garden shed, additional storage building and custom-built predator-resistant chicken coop, while a historic stone spring box tucked into the wooded landscape feeds a small spring-fed pool.

The property's infrastructure received equal attention. The driveway was excavated, graded and rebuilt with deep-aggregate installation of a heavy-duty 21A gravel drive. The  automated gate access was modernized, and wood gates throughout the property were updated. A fourteen-zone irrigation system serves the landscaped areas, while the property is extensively fenced to help protect the grounds from deer and wildlife. A whole-house water-filtration, UV system and two new high-performance water heaters further reflects the level of investment made not only in how the property looks, but in how it functions day to day.

Beyond the property lies the landscape that makes Bluemont and Western Loudoun so enduringly desirable. Located in Clarke County, just over the Loudoun County line—with the benefit of lower real estate taxes—the property is surrounded by vineyards, farm markets and historic villages. The Blue Ridge, Appalachian Trail and miles of nearby hiking offering an easy connection to the outdoors. Purcellville and Leesburg are within comfortable reach, Dulles International Airport is conveniently accessible, and Washington, D.C. is approximately an hour’s drive away—allowing 19233 Blue Ridge Mountain Road to feel genuinely private without being remote.

What emerges is a home that feels deeply rooted in its past, yet unmistakably defined by modern luxury. The original 1880 cabin, the layered architecture, the detailed level of design, and the privacy of the surrounding acreage come together in a way that feels distinctively sophisticated, beautifully resolved and impossible to replicate.
